Introduction

Directive 2002/49/EC on the assessment and management of environmental noise is rather unique among the noise-related legislation of the European Union (further in the text – EU). All other legislation which EU adopted deals with the sources of noise, in particular from products. The main purpose of this legislation is to ensure uniform product standards, so that the products covered can circulate freely within EU and can be used everywhere. This is demonstrated by the fact that the legislation only applies to products which are newly put on the market, but does not apply to products already in use.
