General Framework of EU Water Law
Evolution of the WFD – protection of human health and the environment

By contrast, two other Directives dealing with very important types of discharges into the aquatic environment do remain in force and they constitute major pieces of EU water legislation, both in terms of their important contribution to the protection of human health and the environment and by the level of judicial activity they have generated and will likely keep generating for the years to come.

The first one is Directive 91/271/EEC concerning urban waste-water treatment. The second one is Directive 91/676/EEC concerning the protection of waters against pollution caused by nitrates from agricultural sources.
