Other objectives, as mentioned in Article 1 of Directive 2008/50/EC are:

• the establishment of common methods and criteria in order to assess air quality all over the European Union
• obtain information on air quality, in order to monitor long-term trends and to improve the quality
• making information on air quality available to the public
• avoid a deterioration and ensure improvement of air quality
• promote cooperation among EU Member States in order to reduce air pollution
